MACROSCOPIC URINALYSIS WITH REFLEX TO MICROSCOPY (UAWR)

Screens for urinary tract, renal, and metabolic abnormalities via chemical dipstick analysis of urine.

Specimens with any one of the following abnormal chemical or physical findings will automatically reflex to microscopic examination of urine sediment:

(1) Leukocyte Esterase is >= Trace.

(2) Nitrites is Positive.

(3) Blood is >= Trace.

(4) Protein is > Trace.

(5) Urine Color is Abnormal.

SPECIMEN:

- Type: Clean-Catch Urine

- Container: Vacuette Urinalysis (Plain Yellow-Top) Tube

- Minimum Volume Required: 3 mL

- Storage/Handling: Specimen should be capped tightly and transported to the laboratory promptly. If testing cannot be performed within the stability window listed below, refrigerate immediately.

NOTE: Do NOT centrifuge or add preservative unless otherwise instructed; refrigeration is preferred over freezing, as freezing destroys formed elements needed for microscopic exam.

- Stability:

Room Temperature (20-25 °C): 2 hours

Refrigerated (2-8 °C): 1 day

- Turnaround Time: 24 hours from receipt.

Special Instructions: Patients should be instructed to collect a clean-catch, midstream sample when infection is suspected, to minimize contamination from external flora, using the following procedure:

Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before collection.
Cleanse the genital area from front to back using the provided antiseptic wipe(s):
- Females: Spread the labia and wipe from front to back on each side, then down the middle.
- Males: Retract the foreskin (if uncircumcised) and wipe the tip of the penis in a circular motion.
Begin urinating into the toilet, allowing the first portion of the stream to pass.
Without stopping the stream, collect a midstream sample directly into the sterile specimen cup, avoiding contact between the cup and skin.
Finish urinating into the toilet, then securely cap the specimen cup.

First-morning specimens are preferred for microalbumin or protein evaluation due to increased concentration.

REJECTION REASONS: Excessive Mucus, Color Interference, QNS, Contamination, Stability Violation, Expired Container, Incorrect Container
